Preschool Humor

Friday, August 14th, 2009

I have learned much in the past few years about the humor of 3-5 year olds. It is often not at all funny to an adult and it doesn’t even have to make sense to be funny. My children can get each other into that really giggly state telling jokes to each other like:

“What kind of dog like to cross the road?”
Answer: “Buddabayba” (or some other nonsense word).

Lately, however their humor has become more sophisticated and they like to hear jokes from other people. Unfortunately, the joke often gets lost in translation. For example, last night our dear friend, Kathryn, came over and stayed with the kids for a while. She told them the following joke:

Why to cows wear bells?
Answer: Because their horns don’t work.

Jane’s response to that was, “I know their horns don’t make noise.”

She had to have it explained to her what was funny.

What is amusing to a mother is when they try to retell jokes that adults think are funny. Tonight Jane told a joke that had her brothers rolling with laughter. Here it is:

Why don’t cow’s horns work?
Answer: Because no sound comes out of them. They have to wear bells!

Sparkles

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

I noticed a piece of glitter on Jane’s cheek and mentioned it to her.  She said, “Oh, I know where it came from.”  I questioned where it originated expecting to hear about a craft she had done or toy with which she had played.  Her response:  “From my eyes.  You know, how you say I have sparkly eyes.”  I must confess she does, at the least, put a sparkle in my eyes.

A New Song

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

I had meeting with my women’s group at church today.  When I picked up Jane and Ron from childcare after the meeting, one of the workers informed me that Ron sang a song for everyone today.  Since it was a song that he made up himself, no one else knew the words.  After it was over, Jane informed the worker that she knew the song because she lives with Ron.  As we were walking to the car, Jane told me more about Ron’s song.  She said, “It’s a song about race cars, but it’s kind of God-ish because he wanted it to be appropriate.”

GRAMMY: Are you excited about your birthday party?

JANE: It’s going to be a great party, my friends will have fun, my brothers will have fun, I’m gonna have fun. I’m not so sure about my parents.

New boots!

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

As is becoming a tradition, Jane received some new boots as an early birthday present from her great-aunt Ruby.  She not only had to wear them today, but also asked to wear them again after she got her pajamas on.  Jane just loves her boots.

Mother’s Day

A pic or two from Mother’s Day:

Visitors

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Today was a friend’s birthday, and they needed some baby sitting. Fortunately for them, we got the email about the need right after Jane said, “I miss my friends Isabella and Sophia. When can they come over again?”

So they had fun. Ron did too, but he was the odd man out (literally!). Two band-aids and several hours later, everyone was rather tired when their parents came to pick them up.

Peter lives here too, so here’s a pic from tonight. I was trying out a new flash.

Sleeping: Boys vs Girls

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Tonight, I came home from a meeting and the kids were already in bed.  The boys were out, Peter face down and snoozing.  Ron was in a pseudo victory position (victory position: is where they have their arms raised over their heads, similar to the touchdown signal from football).  In one hand was his current favorite blue race car (a hot wheels type), and in the other, was “King”, a toy version of “The King” character from Cars.  Nearby were a couple of train engines from our Thomas collection (I’m not sure which ones).  The cars are the current favorite toy – so much so that when they were forbidden at the dinner table during dinner, fits were thrown and appetites diminished.
Checking on Jane found her awake, and chatty.  “Hi Daddy.”  “Hi Jane.”  We chatted about stuff for a bit, and then she said, “Mommy found my blankie.  It’s small tho, and square, and soft.  [hugs it]  But it’s mine, and I love it.”  She is in her own room, and loving it.  We bought her a lamp for her room, which she has been really excited about.  She helped to pick it out from Target, and has been really good about using it without playing with it.  We let her go to bed and read for a while before turning her lamp off and going to sleep.

Last Night

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

We heard something coming from the kid’s room. I went back to check. Jane was barely awake. I asked her, “What’s going on?”

“It’s hard to sleep when Ron’s being so quiet.”

Apparently, she’s used to Ron being noisy while she’s going to sleep. When they go to bed at the same time, Ron and Peter like to play a bit before sleeping. Last night, Ron was so tired, I don’t think he made any noise after we put him to bed, or even got out of bed. Jane went to bed a lot later, and had a harder time calming down. She stayed up and played with Mr. Jeremy and Mrs. Wendy, who came over for dinner. Jane told us all sorts of jokes, including a variation on the penguin joke below.

“How many light bulbs does it take to change a penguin?”

“What?”

“How many light bulbs does it take to change a penguin?”
“I don’t know, how many?”

“10!” [laughs very loud and maybe a little bit forced, like if I laugh hard enough, you'll laugh too, even if you don't get the joke so you won't feel left out.] [yes, that's how she laughed]
[Confused] “Why 10?”

“Because that’s how many it takes.” [more laughter, confusion from the listeners wondering what they missed, then realizing they didn't miss anything, genuinely laugh because Jane is funny telling a joke, regardless of the joke.] [and yes, she loved the attention]
